In solidarity with Black Lives Matter, Marcelo was the latest footballer to ‘take a knee’ after scoring in the Real Madrid game against Eibar on Sunday.
Marcelo scored at the 37th minute of Madrid’s first game back in La Liga, and decided to celebrate his shot by kneeling with one fist raised in respect to the movement. The movement is popularly symbolized by a raised fist.
This is not Marcelo’s first anti-racist initiative. Previously, the left-back had entered FIFA’s Avoid Bigotry, Violence and Discrimination campaign, appearing in a black shirt alongside Gianluigi Buffon, Rio Ferdinand, Gerard Pique and 40 former and current football stars with a request to stop such incidents.
