In La Liga football results, Cadiz frustrated Real Madrid with a 0-0 draw on Sunday at home, the Santiago Bernabeu. Due to this only one-point-ensuring draw, Real saw their lead at the top of La Liga cut to six points.
Real Madrid went into the game with seven players missing because Dani Carvajal was absent through injury. And Luka Modric, Marcelo (the football news), Marco Asensio, Rodrygo, Gareth Bale, and Andriy Lunin all tested positive for COVID-19.
These seven absences, meanwhile, meant a first league start for Hazard in over three months. But Real Madrid were going up against Cadiz, who had won on their last visit to Bernabeu in October 2020.
La Liga Football Results – Cadiz Frustrated Real Madrid with a 0-0 Draw
The opening 45 minutes saw Madrid control possession but they still struggled to break down a deep-lying, well-organised Cadiz defence.
Real could only take shots from distance, with Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and Ferland Mendy all firing over the bar. Them, Ledesma palmed away Valverde’s stinging shot.
Casemiro was lucky to escape with just a yellow card for a cynical challenge on Ivan Alejo. As a consequence, he’ll now miss Madrid’s midweek game at Athletic Bilbao through suspension.
In the meantime, Lucas Vazquez and Kroos both sent optimistic shots off target before halftime.
Madrid raised the tempo after the break.
However, such a tight first half with no clear chances led to a more open second half. Via Eden Hazard and Vinicius Junior, Madrid pushed for a breakthrough.
But Cadiz keeper Jeremias Ledesma managed to save both their efforts.
Kroos spotted Hazard’s clever run behind into space, but Cadiz saved the Belgian’s header. Also, Casemiro curled wide and Ledesma denied Vinicius’ attempt too.
The Brazil winger was finding more space on the left, while Hazard looked to be growing in confidence. But Cadiz almost punished Real Madrid on the break when substitute Alvaro Negredo shot wide.
Finally, the guests also saved Karim Benzema’s effort when he attempted a free kick.
And because Cadiz continued to threaten on the counter, Madrid had to settle for a point. So, the current league leaders failed to take all three points for the first time since October.
