Brighton 6-0 Wolves: Brighton & Hove Albion played a huge game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon. The Seagulls really left the visitors in the AMEX Stadium intact. Nottingham Forest let a golden victory slip through the fingers against Brentford.
Unchained Brighton writes Premier League history
Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi surprised by giving star players Kaoru Mitoma, Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister a rest. However, that threesome turned out not to be necessary at all to sweep Wolves off the field. Thanks to goals from Deniz Undav, Pascal Gross (2) and Danny Welbeck, it was already 4-0 halfway through.
Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui intervened hard at half-time with a quadruple substitution, but Brighton continued to dominate after the restart. Via Welbeck and an unparalleled marker from Undav, De Zerbi’s formation went further to 6-0.
For Brighton it is the biggest victory in club history in the Premier League. The Seagulls are also doing good business in the battle for European football. Brighton has only two points less than number five Tottenham Hotspur and also two games more to play.
A setback for Brighton was the injury of Joël Veltman. The defender grabbed his hamstring halfway through the second half and was unable to continue. He left the field emotionally and was replaced by Caicedo.
Brentford 2-1 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest managed to beat Brighton on Wednesday and almost repeated that trick on a visit to Brentford on Saturday. The home team had an extreme amount of possession, but it was Forest who opened the score through Danilo just before half-time: 0-1.
In the final phase, the guests still handed over that very welcome victory. Ivan Toney made it 1-1 with his twentieth Premier League goal of the season. Josh Dasilva then put Forest in mourning in the 94th minute by also making it 2-1.
For Forest, that could well be a very costly defeat. The team of coach Steve Cooper is still above the relegation line, but has to fear that the competition will come alongside later this weekend. Leeds United will visit AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, while Leicester City and Everton will play against each other on Monday.
