Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema may face jail time soon. He is to stand trial for blackmailing midfielder Mathieu Valbuena.
Benzema blackmailed Valbuena, now playing for Olympiacos, with an intimate video.
The trial will take place in Versailles from October 20 to 22, writes L’Equipe. And Benzema may face jail time if the verdict is against his interest.
If proven guilty, Benzema could face up to five years in prison and a €75,000 fine.
This is not the only time Benzema may have shown hostility toward fellow footballers. He was once caught trash talking him own teammate.
For the blackmail, the investigation team suspects Benzema acted as an intermediary in 2015.
He was the one to incite Valbuena to pay blackmailers not to post an intimate video of Mathieu.
The blackmail situation kept both players out of the French national team for Euro 2016.
Benzema has not been called up to the national team since, and he missed the victorious 2018 World Cup.
