PSG 0-2 Renne: Paris Saint-Germain supporters are done with Lionel Messi. When the name of the Argentinian world champion blared from the speakers on Sunday before the home game with Stade Rennes, boos and a whistle were heard. To make matters worse, the Ligue 1 leader suffered a sensitive defeat (0-2).
Stade Rennes pulls off upset in Paris, Messi booed
Messi has scored eighteen goals this season and provided seventeen assists, but can do little good in the French capital. PSG supporters believe that the 35-year-old attacker does not show enough for the royal salary he receives. A member of the Collectif Ultras called on PSG on Saturday to whistle Messi during the game against Rennes. That happened.
The home crowd showed its dissatisfaction both when his name was announced and when Messi touched the ball. That resulted in surrealistic images. As the game progressed, the chagrin in Paris increased, as Karl Toko Ekambi gave the visitors the lead just before half-time. The Cameroonian outwitted Gianluigi Donnarumma with a concealed shot in the far corner.
That turned out to be the start of a nasty evening for PSG, which had to take a new blow immediately after the break. Arnaud Kalimuendo struck from the counterattack and doubled the score in the 48th minute (0-2). Christophe Galtier’s formation of millions was unable to fight back and left the field with its tail between its legs.
Few consequences for PSG
The defeat has so far little consequences for PSG’s title aspirations. The Parisians are nine points ahead of closest pursuer RC Lens with ten games to go. Olympique Marseille will come into action on Sunday and will be seven points behind the list leader with a victory.
