In the search for reinforcements for the selection, PSV ended up with an old acquaintance in PSG midfielder Gini Wijnaldum.
PSV is thinking about Wijnaldum
Wijnaldum left PSV eight years ago for a new adventure at Newcastle United. This was followed by transfers to Liverpool and PSG. The French top club rented out the Orange international to AS Roma last season, losing the Europa League final to Sevilla.
Wijnaldum still has an ongoing contract with Paris Saint-Germain until mid-2024, but may therefore also be able to return to the Netherlands. PSV hopes to entice the 88-time international to return to the Philips Stadium to strengthen the selection of new head coach Peter Bosz.
Between 2011 and 2015, Wijnaldum played 154 official matches for PSV. He scored 56 goals and 24 assists. As a PSV player, Wijnaldum won the KNVB Cup, the Johan Cruijff Shield and the national title in the 2014/15 season. Eight years later and a whole lot of honorary metal further, a return to Eindhoven beckons.
PSG owner involved in Man Utd takeover bid, PL clubs demand investigation
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi has played an important role in the Manchester United takeover negotiations. The owner of Paris Saint-Germain has reportedly been approached by the Glazer family, the current owners of United, to influence one of the two interested parties.
The Athletic came with that news on Friday afternoon. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the sheikh of Qatar, has been embroiled in a battle with British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe to take over Manchester United. Sheikh Jassim’s bidding team consulted Al-Khelaïfi for advice at an earlier stage. Later, the Glazers decided to contact him as well. He had to make an effort to get Sheikh Jassim to raise his offer.
Al-Khelaifi’s involvement has caused astonishment in England. Several Premier League clubs have demanded an investigation into potential funding sources. Many club owners are concerned about the possibility of Manchester United becoming state property. The clubs want the Premier League to look into that.
Sheikh Jassim is the son of the former Emir of Qatar, but is making the offer privately. The money comes from his Nine Two Foundation and not from the state, according to Jassim himself.
