Paris Saint-Germain has fired Christophe Galtier. L’Équipe, Le Parisien and RMC Sport report this, among others. The French coach was under fire for disappointing performance and accusations of racism.
Paris Saint-Germain immediately puts Galtier on the street
Director Luis Campos would have informed Galtier on Tuesday morning that his employment in the French capital would be terminated immediately. This is a result of the (too) poor sporting performance of PSG, which flew out of the Champions League in the eighth finals at the hands of Bayern Munich.
PSG also fell prematurely in the battle for the Coupe de France. In Ligue 1, the star ensemble remained in the lead despite a few slips. That led to title prolongation, although closest pursuer RC Lens eventually finished just one point behind the national champion.
Off the field, Galtier was embroiled in a much-discussed case. The trainer was accused of racism and Islamophobia in the period at his previous employer OGC Nice.
Galtier started at PSG in the summer of 2022. The 56-year-old Frenchman was released on the Côte d’Azur to work in Parc des Princes as the successor to Mauricio Pochettino. It is not yet known who should succeed Galtier. The names of Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique and Xabi Alonso are singing around in the corridors. According to L’Equipe, Nagelsman will soon report to Paris for talks with PSG. The French newspaper thinks that the German has the best papers.
Future of Hjulmand clear: “Important years ahead”
We shift our focus from termination of a coach to an extension. The Danish national coach Kaspar Hjulmand has extended his contract with the national association. As a result, he is fixed until the summer of 2026.
Hjulmand has been national coach of Denmark since 2020. Two years ago he reached the semi-finals at the European Championship, in which England was the better. Hjulmand’s name was briefly mentioned as a possible successor to John Heitinga at Ajax, but after the contract extension with Denmark a line can finally be drawn through.
“My goal was to bring Denmark together, to inspire and to give back to the children and the clubs where the players grew up,” says Hjulmand. “I think we’ve done that, but it shouldn’t stop here. We have some important years ahead of us and I am motivated to achieve even more with the national team. I want to continue to be part of the development of Danish football.”
After winning the Europa League, Sevilla comes with news about success coach
Continuing with contract extensions, Sevilla enters the new season with successful coach José Luis Mendilibar. The 62-year-old Spaniard has extended his stay in Andalusia by one season.
Mendilibar took over as Sevilla were just two points above the relegation zone with ten games to play. The club finished in twelfth place nine points above the relegation zone and also managed to win the Europa League final against AS Roma. In the rounds before, Juventus and Manchester United were put aside.
That is reason enough for Sevilla to extend with Mendilibar, who signed a new contract on Tuesday. He won eight games in 2.5 months, drew six and lost three.
