Atletico Madrid 5-1 Cadiz: Atlético Madrid is the new number two in La Liga. It made mincemeat of Cádiz in front of its own audience on Wednesday and overtook Real Madrid in the ranking.
Atlético Madrid won its seventh game in a row at the Estádio Cívitas Metropolitano. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring for the home side after just two minutes, scoring from a Yannick Carrasco cross. Atlético Madrid made it 2-0 when Griezmann scored again, with an assist from Thomas Lemar, in the 27th minute. Immediately after the break, Álvaro Morata increased Atlético Madrid’s lead. With almost half an hour to go, Carrasco scored and increased the margin. Anthony Lozano softened the score for Cadiz in the 72nd minute with an assist from José Antonio de la Rosa. But Cadiz was unable to score more. Nahuel Molina extended the lead in the 73rd minute with an assist from Rodrigo De Paul, that brought the final score to 5-1.
Atlético Madrid knock Real Madrid from second place
Real Madrid’s defeat at Real Sociedad gave Atlético the ideal opportunity to take over second place from Los Blancos. That that would happen became clear early in the game, because Atlético played a game that almost everyone already knew how it would end.
The audience at the Wanda Metropolitano was presented with a six-goal game, of which Antoine Griezmann’s goals were the most beautiful. The Frenchman hit the target after just one minute of play and gave Atlético a dream start. After 27 minutes he shot at least as nicely in the far corner.
After Griezmann’s goals, Atlético, which took office without the injured Memphis Depay, played a match in which it did not have to go to the extreme. Álvaro Morata made it 3-0 after the break, after which Yannick Carrasco converted a penalty kick. Anthony Lozano’s goal brought Cádiz a little joy, but Nahuel Molina soon signed for the 5-1.
With five games to go, Atlético is one point above Real Madrid (69 to 68). Barcelona leads with 82 points.
In the last five games, Atlético Madrid have four wins and one loss, while Cadiz have one win, one draw and three losses. In the next match, Atlético Madrid will play at Elche on Sunday, May 14. Cadiz will receive Mallorca on Friday, May 12.
