Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Sociedad: Real Sociedad secured a return to the Champions League on Sunday evening. Despite the 2-1 defeat against Atlético Madrid, the champagne could be uncorked.
Despite losing in Madrid, Real Sociedad celebrates big
Sociedad has been in the top four in La Liga continuously since the turn of the year and has therefore been dreaming of the billion dollar ball for a while. The Basques still had competition from Villarreal, which lost to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. That means that Sociedad can no longer be overtaken on the last day and will finish fourth anyway.
Sociedad participated in the Champions League twice before: in the 2003/04 season and in 2013/14. So there was ten years in between and now, ten years after the last participation, the blue and white are there again. In the previous three seasons, Sociedad always participated in the Europa League.
The other Spanish participants in the Champions League are the usual three: Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
UD Almería 0-0 Real Valladolid
Almería and Real Valladolid made little progress with the goalless draw. One of the two clubs could have been largely out of their worries, but the 0-0 means they both still have to fear. Almería scored the best chances, for Lazaro, among others. Nevertheless, after an equal second half, no goals were scored in Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos. Valladolid therefore faces the last round as number eighteen and is therefore below the line.
Cadiz 1-0 Celta de Vigo
Cádiz did excellent business by winning 1-0 at home against competitor Celta de Vigo. As a result, the club climbed from place seventeen to thirteen. Cádiz is not completely safe yet, but the confidence towards round 38 will be a lot greater. Rubén Sobrino became the match winner after the break, after a goal by Choco Lozano was previously disallowed for offside. Celta, with Renato Tapia and Jørgen Stand Larsen in the starting line-up, could not get back from that.
It was the sixth game in a row for Celta de Vigo that was not won. In the last five games, Cádiz have won two and lost three times, while Celta de Vigo have one draw and four defeats. This was Cádiz’s sixth one-goal victory this season.
