Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke speaks
“It’s really a dream, isn’t it? Play in the Premier League, play at Wembley. If that’s possible… Only one more game to win. This is truly an opportunity up for grabs. Playing in the most beautiful stadium in England. If that’s possible, the semi-final of the FA Cup, the biggest cup tournament in the world. That lives here, huh. Everywhere, it’s tradition. And actually I just want to win it now,” Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke said.
“The FA Cup tournament is just magical,” says Van Hecke. “The Premier League is beautiful, but it is also a kind of showcase for tourists. Day trippers come here. You can hear the old-fashioned noise at the clubs on the lower levels. In the FA Cup it is still old-fashioned running and flying. Those long throw-ins, playing on corners, kick and rush.”
“And then those stadiums. All full house, second or third tier clubs that take six thousand supporters to away games. Many stadiums are located in residential areas, the stands are a meter from the sidelines. You can almost hear the fans breathing,” Van Hecke smiles. He sometimes feels like a kid in a candy store at Brighton. “The love for football, the admiration for the players, then you feel everything: this counts for the people.”
