Matheus Cunha will be the first major reinforcement for rock bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers’ mission to crawl out of the Premier League relegation zone. Julen Lopetegui, recently the manager of the English last, has confirmed the arrival of the attacker from Atlético Madrid.
Earlier this week , English and Spanish media already wrote about the upcoming transfer from Cunha (23) to Wolverhampton. Lopetegui did not want to respond at the time. “Now I can talk about him, because it is clear that he will come to us,” the Spaniard said at a press conference on Friday. “It will be completed when the market opens.” This is next Sunday, January 1, 2023.
“He’s a good player,” Lopetegui says of Cunha. “I know him well and I think he is a good asset to us: for the present and for the future. He will certainly help us, but for the upcoming games we have to focus on the players who are here now.’ Wolverhampton will play against Everton (Monday) and Manchester United (New Year’s Eve) before the turn of the year.
Although no official statements have been made about the mandatory transfer fee that Wolves will pay next summer, Sky Sports knows that it is between forty and fifty million euros.
Matheus Cunha’s career trajectory
Cunha has been known for years as a great Brazilian talent. And in the summer of 2019 made the switch from Hertha BSC to Atlético Madrid for thirty million euros. He played 54 official matches for the Spanish top club, but he never managed to become a permanent fixture. Cunha came in nine raids and two basic places in this La Liga season.
The Brazilian comes from Coritiba’s youth, but made the switch to the Swiss FC Sion at a young age (17). He then played for RB Leipzig and Hertha BSC before joining Atlético. In addition, Cunha is an eight-time Brazilian international.
Wolverhampton can make excellent use of his offensive impulses. The team of coach Julien Lopetegui is currently last in the Premier League. And is the lowest scoring team in the competition. Up front, Cunha has to work with Diego Costa and Raul Jiménez. While Sasa Kalajdzic may be able to rejoin in the final phase after a serious knee injury.
