Aston Villa and Wolves stole 3 points at the cost of Fulham and Crystal Palace respectively. Meanwhile, Vardy earned a point for Leicester against Leeds.
Leeds United 1-1 Leicester
A goal from Luis Sinisterra looked like Leeds United were on their way to a costly victory over Leicester City on Tuesday, but Jamie Vardy threw a spanner in the works (1-1). Aston Villa beat Fulham and passed Tottenham Hotspur in the league table.
Leeds escaped a phenomenal goal by Youri Tielemans in the opening phase. The Belgian midfielder rammed the ball into the goal via the underside of the crossbar, but did so on the instructions of Boubakary Soumaré. He was offside, so the VAR put an end to the opening goal.
It fell not much later, but on the other side. Sinisterra, not the biggest of the bunch, put his head against a spinning cross from Jack Harrison (1-0).
The Dutchman mainly had to limit himself to defending, but seemed to ensure that Leeds crossed the line with his teammates. Vardy decided otherwise. The 36-year-old substitute benefited from good work by James Maddison and scored his second goal of the season (1-1). Vardy also thought he would score the winning goal in the final phase, but the striker did so from an offside position.
Both teams make little progress with a draw and have to keep looking down. Leeds remain sixteenth, Leicester seventeenth. Competitors Everton, Nottingham Forest and Southampton are still in action this midweek round.
Aston Villa 1-0 Fulham
Aston Villa has taken over fifth place in the Premier League from Tottenham Hotspur. The Villans booked an economical victory at home over Fulham, where Kenny Tete was on the field for 68 minutes. The Dutchman could not prevent Villa from taking the lead halfway through the first half. Tyrone Mings headed in from a John McGinn corner and scored the only goal of the game (1-0).
Because of that victory, Villa has one more point than Spurs, which will play on Thursday. The North Londoners then take on the Manchester United of manager Erik ten Hag in-house.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 Crystal Palace
Wolverhampton Wanderers have taken a big step towards survival. That was thanks to Joachim Andersen. The former defender of FC Twente opened the scoring after just three minutes, but did so in the wrong goal. That cost Crystal Palace dearly, because the visitors were unable to come alongside in the future. In extra time, Ruben Neves doubled the score from the spot (2-0).
