Loris Karius and Paul Dummett have signed a new one-year contract with Newcastle United. For the former, this means a chance for rehabilitation in the Champions League.
Karius returns to the Champions League
Karius previously played for Liverpool for years and was on target in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid. That game turned into a nightmare for the keeper: he gave the opening goal to Karim Benzema with an unimaginable mistake and later also made a mistake in Gareth Bale’s decisive 3-1.
Immediately after this horror performance, Liverpool bought a new goalkeeper (Alisson Becker) and sent Karius, who was laughed at in England, on a rental basis to Besiktas. There he was under a magnifying glass after his shooting in the Champions League final and every mistake was immediately widely reported.
After the disappointing year in Turkey, Karius went on loan to Union Berlin, where he was second goalkeeper, and ended up without a club after a year without a share at Liverpool. Newcastle United picked him up in September of last year. Karius only played one game for The Magpies: the lost League Cup final against Manchester United.
His expiring contract was not initially extended. But on Sunday Newcastle United announced that Karius (now thirty years old) has still signed for a year. For example, the German returns to the Champions League: Newcastle United qualified for the billion dollar ball via fourth place in the Premier League.
That Dummett (31) stays will do the supporters good. The full-back is the player who has been active for the club the longest. Dummett joined Newcastle United’s youth academy at the age of nine and only left the black and whites on loan twice. The child of the club has made 205 first-team appearances for Newcastle United.
Hamer might make it to the Premier League after all
Gustavo Hamer missed promotion to the Premier League with Coventry City. But can still hope for an adventure at the highest level. Fulham is said to be seriously interested in the 26-year-old midfielder.
Less than two months ago, Hamer was on the threshold of the Premier League with Coventry. In the final at Wembley things went wrong for The Sky Blues. Who had to watch as Luton Town emerged victorious from the penalty shootout and grabbed the last ticket.
An adventure in the Premier League still beckons for the former player of Feyenoord, FC Dordrecht and PEC Zwolle. According to Sky Sports, Fulham is interested in his services. Hamer has spent three seasons with Coventry and still has a one-year contract in the West Midlands. It is unknown what it should cost.
