Pedro Porro is Tottenham Hotspur’s right back winter acquisition after Arnaut Danjuma. The 23-year-old right-wing defender, who was under contract with Manchester City for three years, but never played in the Premier League, is looking for a new chance in England.
Porro will soon return to England. Manchester City paid about twelve million euros for the right back in 2019, but Porro was immediately rented out to Real Valladolid. He was then loaned to Sporting for two years, before making the final switch last summer. Porro therefore never made an official appearance for City in three contract years.
The single international of Spain must finally solve the headache file on the right wing at Tottenham. After Kieran Trippier’s departure in 2019, Serge Aurier, Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal and Djed Spence proved to be unsatisfactory. Aurier, Doherty and Spence are Hotspur’s right back to have left. The latter two moved on Deadline Day.
Atlético Madrid signs Matt Doherty from Tottenham Hotspur
Speaking of which, Atlético Madrid have taken over Matt Doherty from Tottenham Hotspur. The 31-year-old Irishman finishes the season in La Liga. He has signed a contract with Atlético until the end of the season, after his Spurs contract was terminated today.
Djed Spence on loan to Stade Rennes
The transfer of Pedro Porro from Sporting Portugal to Tottenham cleared the way for Doherty to leave North London. After Djed Spence, on loan to Stade Rennes, he is the second right-back to leave Spurs on Deadline Day.
The last player to leave Tottenham for Atletico also happened to be a right-back. Kieran Trippier opted for a Spanish adventure in mid-2019. The 32-year-old Englishman, now a tastemaker at Newcastle United, became champion in La Liga with Los Colchoneros in the 2020/21 season.
After Memphis Depay, Doherty is the second acquisition of this transfer period for Atlético, which is disappointingly fourth in La Liga halfway through the season. The European adventure of Diego Simeone’s team has already come to an end. Atlético finished fourth in the group stage of the Champions League in a group with FC Porto, Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen.
Barça sends Bellerín out to bring in Julián Araujo
No less than three right backs also seem to be making a transfer on Deadline Day due to the transition from the Spanish fullback to Spurs. Barcelona also wants to attract a right back, now that it is letting Bellerín go to Sporting. According to Spanish media, the Catalans are in talks with Los Angeles Galaxy about hiring Julián Araujo. The 21-year-old Mexican was also in the picture at Barça last summer, but then opted for the transfer-free Bellerín.
