Meanwhile, the victory has ensured Inter Milan will remain in the race for Scudetto. The Nerazzurri now have 28 points and are sitting comfortably in the 3rd place, behind only AC Milan and Napoli. The latter two have 32 points each in this 2021-22 Italian domestic campaign.
Serie A Football Results – Napoli Suffer Their First Loss in the Season
In the match, Napoli found themselves deservedly ahead in the 17th minute when Piotr Zielinski stole the ball in midfield. He nicked the ball off Nicolo Barella’s boot in the middle of the park, and finished off a sweeping counterattack.
This was the visitors’ first goal against ‘I Nerazzurri’ at San Siro since April 2017. And it meant that the league’s top scorers had to breach its tightest backline to get an equalizing result.
Luckily for the hosts, Inter did just that twice in the opening 45 minutes to come from behind.
Hakan Çalhanoglu equalized for Inter Milan by converting the penalty midway through the first half, at 25 minutes.
Ivan Perisic met Çalhanoğlu’s corner delivery and planted the header from close range into the left side of the goal.
So, we saw Inter coming back from behind and taking the lead before the break.
But still, in the second half, Inter’s advantage remained fragile until Inzaghi’s side added a third goal on the hour-mark. This time, it was Lautaro Martinez who slammed the ball into the back of the net.
Seemingly out of sight, Luciano Spalletti’s last roll of the dice was to bring Dries Mertens in. And the Belgian made no mistake scoring his 103rd Serie A goal just 3 minutes after entering the pitch.
So, Mertens managed to make it 3-2 but Napoli still lost to Inter.
