At Bayern Munich, the number 7, after Franck Ribéry had worn it for eleven years, rested last season. Now, Serge Gnabry is set to wear it.
“I’m very happy to be wearing this number in the future,” said Gnabry to official Bayern site, “Franck has always pleased the fans-and that motivates me all the more.”
What’s more, the number 7 shirt has graced the backs of a number of impressive names in the history of FC Bayern.
Beside Ribéry, Mehmet Scholl has carried it. Also, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, current chairman of the FCB and who played there between 1975 and 1978, has worn it.
Finally, Hansi Flick, current head coach of Gnabry, also wore it himself in the 1986/87 season.
Now, from next season, Gnabry, who has worn the number 22 so far, will turn out for FC Bayern in the number 7 shirt.
In the triple-winning season, Germany’s international was also a big hit in number 22.
Among other successes, he formed the deadliest partnership in the Champions League with Robert Lewandowski (24 goals in all).
Gnabry scored nine goals at the end, including his historic four-goal run in a 7-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur and 2 important first goals in a 3-0 semi-final.
