Sebastien Haller kept up his scoring streak to help Ajax Amsterdam end the group stage with a 100% record. Among other Champions League football results, Ajax beat Sporting CP 4-2 in Group C at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Tuesday.
Ajax topped Group C with a maximum 18 points. On the other hand, the Portuguese champions, who had already been confirmed runners-up, finished with nine points.
And they used the last group match, thus inconsequential, to give several young players a first run-out in European competition.
The two teams, hosts Ajax and their guests Sporting, played the match behind closed doors. This was because of restrictions that the Dutch government imposed again, after a surge in COVID-19 cases in the Netherlands.
In the match itself, Haller became only the second player to score in each game of the six-match group phase. Cristiano Ronaldo was the first player to do so, in 2017-18 he tucked away an eighth-minute penalty to take his tally in this year’s competition to 10.
Champions League Football Results – Ajax Beat Sporting CP 4-2
Ajax forward Sebastian Haller scored on a penalty in the eighth minute of the football match.
However, soon, Sporting equalised through Nuno Santos in the 22nd minute.
But Brazilian Antony restored the Dutch side’s lead just before halftime after a horrific defensive error that the visitors made.
David Neres then further extended Ajax’s advantage after 58 minutes and four minutes later, Steven Berghuis added the fourth goal.
Sporting got a 78th minute consolation goal when Bruno Tabata’s thunderous side-footed shot off the underside of the crossbar. But the Portuguese side did eventually lose 4-2 to the native Netherlands’ club.
