Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara underwent groin surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the Bundesliga season.
The Bundesliga season ends this Saturday with Bayern facing Borussia Monchengladbach on June 27.
After the domestic campaign has been completed, Flick ‘s men will turn their attention to the Champions League, where they have a 3-0 lead over Chelsea after one leg in the last 16.
Recently, however, Spain International Alcantara was plagued by injury and his participation was minimal as Bayern closed on what would be an eighth consecutive league title.
The club has now reported Thiago faces an out of action spell as he recovers from his setback.
Head coach Hansi Flick said in a Friday news conference: “Thiago has had a groin operation. He’s going to be out for three weeks. We’ve decided to get it done right now. It’s possible he’ll be back for the cup final.”
Flick’s confusion about Thiago ‘s availability against Bayer Leverkusen for the DFB-Pokal final makes sense, considering that the match is scheduled for July 4.
If Bayern’s expectation of a three-week absence proves accurate, Thiago would be on the point of returning to action by that stage, but he would lack match-fitness.
Thiago Alcantara of Bayern Munich thus faces a fight to be fit in time for the DFB-Pokal final after a recent operation.
The 29-year-old seems likely to miss the run-in to the league championship.
