Wolfsburg 2-4 Bayern Munich: Bayern Munich regained the lead on Sunday. VfL Wolfsburg bit in the dust due to a Bavarian lightning start, but it was not a carefree Bavarian evening.
It took some getting used to for the German ruler Bayern, who on Sunday as dethroned Bundesliga leader entered into battle with VfL Wolfsburg. After three 1-1 draws in a row, Julian Nagelsmann’s team had helped the competition close the gap. Union Berlin had even surpassed the Bavarian formation on Saturday.
The faltering Bundesliga restart had increased the pressure, when Manuel Neuer’s harsh statements caused additional unrest this weekend. The visit to VfL Wolfsburg turned out to be the way out of the crisis.
Within twenty minutes the grumpiness was gone. It started with a somewhat lucky hit by Kingsley Coman, who saw the ball end up right at the far post in the Wolfsburg goal after his cross. Not long after, the French attacker doubled the margin with a volley. Thomas Müller completed the lightning start in the nineteenth minute; 0-3.
It was not a completely carefree evening for Bayern. Shortly before halftime the first dark clouds appeared. Jakub Kaminski, who had filled in for victimised Maxence Lacroix after half an hour, did something in return on behalf of Wolfsburg.
2nd half
In the 54th minute, the home side got another boost. Joshua Kimmich collected the second yellow card of the game. It left Bayern to take their first Bundesliga win of 2023 with one man less.
The Bavarians succeeded, however, the argument was settled in favour of Bayern in the 73rd minute, where Matthijs de Ligt started, Daley Blind came in and the injured Ryan Gravenberch was absent. Jamal Musiala soloed through the Wolfsburger defence to free his team with the 1-4. As a result, the second goal of Die Wölfe – Mattias Svanberg hit the mark – was no reason for panic. Also because the 3-4 was rejected due to offside.
With the victory, Bayern jumped over Union Berlin to the lead again. VfL Wolfsburg, where Micky van de Ven played strongly, is stuck in seventh place in the Bundesliga due to the third defeat in a row.
