AC Milan 0-2 Inter Milan: Internazionale took a big step towards the Champions League final on Wednesday evening. Against AC Milan, the first eleven minutes were enough to put the rival at a considerable disadvantage.
Dream start gives Inter good start against powerless Milan
It was the first time since April 12, 2005 that Milan and Inter faced each other in the Champions League. At the time, the game was played in the quarterfinals and the game ended prematurely. Inter fans threw fireworks on the field and hit Milan goalkeeper Dida, after which the match was permanently stopped. Via a regulation victory, Milan advanced to the semi-finals, in which they played against PSV and won. Milan lost to Liverpool in the final.
Also on Wednesday there were fireworks on the side of Inter, but this time it came from the players. Within eleven minutes it was 0-2, with Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as quick goalscorers. To make matters worse, Milan also lost Ismaël Bennacer, who had been so important in the previous round with a goal against Napoli.
Bennacer left the field with an injury and reported to Milan’s already full infirmary. For example, star player Rafael Leão was not there on Wednesday evening. Without his ideas, Milan created very little. In the first half, the club didn’t even get a single attempt between the posts. Inter was therefore a lot more dangerous and could have come to 0-3, were it not for the referee’s VAR drawing a line through a penalty kick given to Lautaro Martínez.
Second half
Milan actually had chances in the second half, but one of the best opportunities was for the Nerazzurri. Dzeko came one on one with Mike Maignan, but the French goalie prevented worse. On the other hand, Sandro Tonali hit the outside of the post, so that Onana kept a clean sheet again. For the seventh time in this Champions League season, the goalkeeper did not concede a goal, the way to the final is open due to the 0-2 victory.
Next week, Milan and Inter will meet again. Inter can then capitalize on their good starting position to take their first place in the Champions League final since 2010.
