Juventus has informed Barcelona and Real Madrid that it will no longer proceed with the Super League project. However, the superpower from Turin denies that a threat from UEFA is the reason, as Spanish media say on the basis of a letter in their hands.
Juventus confirm departure from Super League, but denies UEFA threat
Former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli, along with his Spanish colleagues Joan Laporta and Florentino Pérez, was a major champion of the Super League and continued to support the initiative even after the English clubs pulled out. However, Agnelli, like his entire management, has since left Juve because of the financial scandal that resulted in the club being given a penalty of ten minus points. The new leadership has now informed Barça and Real that preparations are being made to exit the Super League project.
General manager Maurizio Scanavino stated in the letter to Barça and Real, according to AS, that UEFA is threatening to ban participation in European competitions for five years, but Juve denies this in a statement on Tuesday evening. Following the Italian authorities, the European Football Association is investigating the financial abuses that have already cost the club dear in their own country. According to Marca, Juventus hopes to limit UEFA’s punishment by leaving the Super League project. Which has been denounced by the European Football Association.
Di María can be picked up on a free transfer after ‘difficult period’ at Juventus
Ángel Di María leaves Juventus after a year. The Argentine wing forward has confirmed on Instagram that he is not renewing his expiring contract.
Di María came over on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Where his contract was also not renewed after seven years of loyal service. In Turin, the 35-year-old Argentine rarely approached the level he achieved in the World Cup final against France at the end of last year, when he was one of the great stars on his way to winning the world title.
Di María struggled with injuries in particular in the first half of the season. After the turn of the year, the technically gifted winger had a strong phase, including a hat-trick in the Europa League against FC Nantes, but his last goal in Serie A now dates from mid-February against Spezia. In the end, the counter got stuck at eight goals and seven assists.
Italian media already assumed that Di María’s stay would be limited to a season. Now that Juventus missed out on the Champions League due to a points penalty for cheating with the budget. El Fideo will not experience the European adventure in the Conference League. He is disappointed that his period at the Old Lady was not more successful.
“A difficult period is coming to an end,” writes Di María. “I leave knowing that I gave everything to help the club win trophies, but it was not possible. The lack of success leaves a bitter aftertaste. But I’m glad I made so many friends in the great dressing room. I have always felt at home and you are forever in my heart.”
