In order to comply with La Liga’s FFP rules (Financial Fair Play regulations), Barcelona intends to sit down again with Frenkie de Jong and Marc-André ter Stegen. With that, Mundo Deportivo opens on the front page on Sunday morning.
Barça wants to meet again with De Jong and Ter Stegen in the context of austerity measures
For next season, the Catalans are heading for a deficit of 200 million euros. The club does not only want to solve this by selling players, but salary reduction of some important players is also an option. For this, Barça would have to sit down with De Jong and Ter Stegen, who would receive a longer contract in exchange for a lower income. Earlier, the Orange international and the German goalkeeper also watered down during the corona crisis.
For the time being, those talks are not yet concrete, because Barcelona first wants to await the final verdict of La Liga. However, it is clear that considerable savings will be needed towards the coming season. Due to the move to the Olympic stadium of Montjuïc – due to the renovation of Camp Nou – the upcoming champion of Spain is also missing out on about thirty million euros. And then there are the plans to bring back Lionel Messi.
Last season, Barcelona also tried to cut costs in the salary house. But then Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué did not cooperate. The fact that Piqué stopped during this season still resulted in considerable savings for the Catalans. Whether De Jong and Ter Stegen will agree to a salary cut remains to be seen. The negotiations with Ousmane Dembélé, whose contract expires in 2024, also offer opportunities to cut costs.
Joan Laporta’s broken promise
In January, chairman Joan Laporta said that Barcelona would no longer attempt to cut player salaries. But apparently the situation is so dire that that option is now back on the table. Last summer, De Jong was put under a lot of pressure by the club. He had to leave or hand in. But the 25-year-old midfielder kept his leg stiff. And grew into an indispensable force for Xavi this season.
