Manchester United has bad news to report in the run-up to the Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla. Star player Marcus Rashford has to miss several games.
Big setback for Ten Hag: Rashford on the side for several games
Rashford, match winner against Brentford a week ago, has been injured by a muscle. Last weekend he had to leave after eighty minutes in the 2-0 win over Everton. Manchester United says that Rashford will be missing ‘a few games’. The Englishman is expected to return for the final stages of the season.
Rashford is having the best season of his career under trainer Erik ten Hag. He scored 28 goals across all competitions.
Manchester United will play the first part of the diptych with Sevilla on Thursday. On Sunday, the number four in the Premier League will visit low flyer Nottingham Forest.
Ten Hag speaks out about injuries and sees room for improvement for Antony
Erik ten Hag received further bad news in the run-up to the first meeting with Sevilla. At the press conference that followed, the manager spoke about the other injuries.
“Garnacho and Shaw are both not available yet. Garnacho’s injury is more serious, but I expect Shaw to be back shortly,” said Ten Hag, who was non-committal about the seriousness of Rashford’s injury. “A few games, that’s the statement. We have to see how it develops,” he added.
“It’s a setback for Rashford and of course he’s disappointed,” Ten Hag said of the impact of the injury on his star striker himself. “But he is not completely broken, because he will return soon. He has started his rehabilitation.”
Martial
“We don’t have to force things with Martial,” said Ten Hag about the man who came in last weekend and scored at Manchester United. “We are very careful with him. I think he’s ready to start but the attacking trio against Everton and Brentford worked really well. When Martial is in the team, we play our best football and have our best results as a team.”
Antony
In those last two matches, Manchester United played with Rashford as a point player and Jadon Sancho and Antony on the flanks. The latter has little return in the Premier League with three goals and zero assists in seventeen matches. “Of course we expect our front three to be a threat but also to be decisive in the final phase. He needs to work on that, but he is a young player. He’s scored in big games and if you can do that, you can score in Premier League games too,” he concluded.
