Manchester United’s GK David de Gea kept a clean sheet as the club won the League Cup for the sixth time on Sunday. That was not the only thing David de Gea had to celebrate at Wembley. The Spanish shot stopper deprived United icon Peter Schmeichel of a record.
De Gea kept his goal clean for the 181st time at The Red Devils against Newcastle United. With that, the goalkeeper improved the record of Schmeichel, one of his illustrious predecessors under the bar at Old Trafford. “This was the perfect day to do that,” De Gea said to Sky Sports. “To break a record is a great thing, so I’m very proud. Let’s keep going,” the goalkeeper added.
The League Cup win is the ultimate start of a new era for United, according to De Gea. “I think the team can handle anything. We showed that today. We played a great game and won 2-0 against a very good team. You can see it in the supporters, everyone is so happy. It’s a great moment, so let’s enjoy it,” the Spaniard concluded.
Together with Casemiro and Raphaël Varane, De Gea could count on nice words from manager Erik ten Hag. “They know how to win prizes. You need guys like that on the field to put the team down and take it with you. Not only technically, but also mentally. That’s the winning attitude,” AFC Ajax’s former manager said.
Erik ten Hag lost the League Cup
Erik ten Hag won his first prize with Manchester United on Sunday, but lost the League Cup almost immediately. Fortunately, the journalists in the press room were on their toes.
Ten Hag’s press conference was over when the manager got up and wanted to walk away. He had taken the League Cup to the press room and forgot to pick it up again. When the journalists pointed this out to him, he took the silverware with him anyway.
“I can leave it here, right? Already for the next cup. This one has already arrived,” laughed Ten Hag. He hopes to be at Wembley again on Saturday 3 June: then the final of the FA Cup tournament. Their next fixture in that tournament will be against West Ham United in the fifth round.
