Nottingham Forest 0-3 Man Utd: 2023 has started great for Wout Weghorst. After completing a top transfer to Manchester United, the tall attacker was accurate for the first time on behalf of Erik ten Hag’s team on Wednesday evening in the League Cup. Weghorst is full of praise for his new club.
“I think the first week went well. Now it’s up to me to deliver and help the team as best I can. I am quite confident that I can play a role there,” Weghorst, who was hired from Championship club Burnley, told The Independent. When asked about his attitude to a possible longer stay at Old Trafford, Weghorst gave an enthusiastic answer.
“Naturally. It’s a huge club, so I’ll try to do everything the best I can. If you like it from both sides, then it is of course a good option. I’ve been here for a week now and I immediately see how big the club is, in everything. The facilities, but also the qualities in the team,” said Weghorst, who now has four home games in a row to present himself to his new audience.
Wout earns Keane’s admiration
Wout Weghorst has more to offer than Roy Keane initially thought. In the past, the analyst saw the striker mainly as a handful, or a player who keeps opponents busy. “But he is more than that,” Keane said on Sky Sports on Wednesday evening after Weghorst scored his first goal for Manchester United.
In the final minute of the first half, Weghorst scored from a rebound. “I don’t think he’s going to be a goalscoring machine, but if you can score goals like that, help players like Marcus Rashford and have value with your body… He’s an international, but he’s being judged on a tough season with Burnley. Give the boy a chance! He scored a nice goal today and I wish him well,” he added.
Still, Keane admitted that he also had an opinion about Weghorst from his time at Burnley. “I saw him play against United then. I thought he was a handful at the time,” said Keane. “But he’s more than that. If he scores five or six goals this season, it will be a good transfer for all parties. As a trainer you need several options. You can’t just have wingers. He is also important in standard situations and did his defensive job.”
