Newcastle 6-1 Tottenham: Tottenham Hotspur’s disastrous season took on a new chapter on Sunday afternoon. What should have been a game to take a step towards the top four of the Premier League turned into a disgrace. Newcastle United scored three times in the first ten minutes and then 5-0 within 21 minutes.
Tottenham humiliated by Newcastle after five goals in first twenty minutes
Tottenham’s disaster afternoon started with exactly one minute on the clock. Hugo Lloris couldn’t control a shot from Joelinton and the rebound was shot in by Jacob Murphy. A few minutes later, Joelinton was still accurate. He escaped the attention of the Tottenham defense, cleverly controlled a high ball from Fabian Schär and outplayed the keeper.
Tottenham was overrun on all sides and also had to take the third goal within ten minutes. Murphy received the ball and took the plunge by trying from a distance. From about thirty meters he saw his shot come in. Former Willem II player Alexander Isak also contributed. He scored after a beautiful ball outside the foot of Joe Willock behind the defense.
The misery for Tottenham was complete when Newcastle also made it 5-0 after twenty minutes. Once again it was Isak who did not make the Spurs defense look good. That made Christian Stellini decide to intervene. He brought in former Ajax player Davinson Sánchez for Pape Sarr to build in some more defensive security.
In addition, Hugo Lloris was substituted for Fraser Forster at halftime. The reason for the switch is unknown, but it seemed to pay off. Tottenham came out of the dressing room well and scored immediately after the break. Harry Kane outplayed his opponent and fired low into the far corner. Yet even Forster could not keep his goal clean. The final goal of the afternoon came off Callum Wilson’s foot. He got the ball with some luck on his feet and made it 6-1.
“Worst thing I’ve ever seen”
“It’s all very embarrassing,” said the Tottenham captain Lloris on Sky Sports camera. The goalkeeper soon had to fish five times and was taken to the side at halftime. Later it turned out to have to do with an injury and not with his performance. He added, “We should probably apologize to the fans first. We didn’t show our good side today, we couldn’t conform to the level of Newcastle United. We were late everywhere, we completely lost it in the first part of the game.”
Due to the defeat, Tottenham saw the gap to Newcastle increase to six points, while the London team also played a game more.
Interim coach Christian Stellini was also ashamed of Tottenham’s performance. “There are no words to explain an achievement like this. The first 25 minutes were the worst I’ve ever seen. What I can say now is that we have to apologize to everyone. Today we did not play with five, but with four defenders. If this is the mistake, it’s my fault. It was my decision,” he said.
