Javier Tebas has spoken out about a possible move for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi to Manchester City. So, among the football news today, the La Liga president hints of a Manchester City move for Messi.
Messi has recently, after June 30th, become a free agent because Barcelona cannot afford a contract extension on his salary. Barcelona have violated the La Liga salary cap and thus cannot extend their captain’s contract right now.
Meanwhile, Manchester City, long-time pursuers of the Barca superstar, are seemingly closing in on signing him on a free transfer.
And now, the president of the Spanish La Liga himself has teased of a move to City being possible.
La Liga President Hints of a Manchester City Move for Messi
Javier Tebas says that Manchester City are fairly likely to sign their eternal target, Lionel Messi.
“He won’t be able to sign with Barcelona on the previous terms, it’s impossible. I don’t think any European club will be able to pay that amount,” Tebas said to Sky Sports.
“Manchester City lost €270 million [during the pandemic], so obviously they can’t even consider signing Messi at the same salary.”
“If they do, however, it would be financially doping. I told Guardiola about it too,” Tebas went on. “Told him directly, ‘would you have won so many titles without that kind of financial doping?’”
He then said: “This sort of thing is really destroying football. It’s not about the real money in this case, because it’s not generated by the clubs. If the money in the football industry is not generated by football, it causes inflation. Bad inflation.
“It just spoils football because clubs are not living within their means. We really need to fight this and we will continue to do so all the time.
“This is one of our unresolved problems in European football and if it is not solved soon, it could lead us to a very difficult financial situation.”
