Among other of Sunday’s La Liga football results, Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 home win against Rayo Vallecano (football match). Defending champions Atletico hence got back on track after four consecutive league losses thanks to Argentinian winger Angel Correa’s brace.
Correa scored a goal on a rebound from inside the box. This was after a great play and strike from Yannick Carrasco in the 28th minute.
The player then volleyed in a low cross from Renan Lodi in the 53rd minute.
The win was a relief for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, who had tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week. The coach, now testing negative, had never previously lost more than two successive league matches since taking charge in 2011.
Also, Atleti are fourth with 32 points from 19 matches, having thus leapfrogged Rayo in the league standings. Meanwhile, Rayo are at 5th place in La Liga, with 30 points.
La Liga Football Results – Atletico Madrid Secured a 2-0 Home Win
Simeone was missing Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix and captain Koke due to the pandemic and Spanish international flanker Marcos Llorente, to injury.
As a result, the Argentinian coach decided to change his system from three defenders to a classic 4-4-2.
And it was this change that proved to be key as defenders Kieran Trippier and Renan Lodi dominated the touchline. We saw them winning in every phase of the game.
The first goal started with a combination between the English right back and midfielder Rodrigo de Paul. The latter passed to Carrasco who entered the area and shot at the goal. When the ball rebounded on a deflecting, Correa was the quickest to get to it and he opened the scoring.
In the second half, Brazilian international Lodi sprinted up front and found Correa in the box with a perfect cross. And thus did Correa complete a brace for the home side to win 2-0.
