After playing in the starting XI for Spain’s UEFA Nations League semi-final against Italy, Gavi has become their youngest-ever debutant. Among the football news emerging out of the Italy-Spain clash, Gavi becomes the youngest player to debut for Spain ever.
Following an injury crisis, Gavi broke into Barcelona’s first squad and now he has also started for his country, Spain.
As such, Gavi’s Barcelona colleague Ansu Fati received his first cap at the age of 17 years and 308 days.
This just proves that Luis Enrique, the Spain manager, has never been afraid to put his faith in young players.
Enrique even gave Pedri, who is currently out of the squad due to injury, a chance, when he was 18. Indeed, the coach chose him to start in every single Spain game during Euro 2020 at just 18 years old.
Gavi Becomes the Youngest Player to Debut for Spain
And now, Luis Enrique chose Gavi, who’s just made his Barcelona first-team debut too, to start for Spain against Italy.
The midfielder has thus only played 10 professional games before also debuting at the international level with Spain’s starting squad.
He has consequently become La Furia Roja’s youngest-ever player, at the young age of 17 years and 62 days.
Gavi has broken this record of age that Angel Zubieta, who first played for Spain in 1936, formerly held.
According to the Athletic, speaking about Gavi just after he was called up, the former Barcelona manager said:
“I have known Gavi for many years, he is one of the models of the Barca youth academy. I have no doubt about the performance he will give.
“He’s a pure midfielder, very much in the Barca style. He brings interesting things with the ball and without the ball.”
