Fulham 0-1 Tottenham: Kane equaled club icon Jimmy Greaves on Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time top goalscorer list on Monday night, but what’s that record worth if it doesn’t bring tangible success? Manager Antonio Conte very much hopes that the 29-year-old striker can win a prize with Spurs.
Kane gave Tottenham another victory in the Premier League on Monday evening after two consecutive defeats against Arsenal and Manchester City by scoring the only goal of the game against Fulham: 0-1. It marked his 266th official goal for Spurs, as many as Greaves scored between 1961 and 1970. But where the English legend of yesteryear also helped the club to two FA Cups and a European Cup II during that period, Kane is still waiting for his first major prize with the Londoners.
If it is up to Conte, that will soon change. “I want to help him and his teammates to win something with Tottenham, because he loves Tottenham,” the Italian manager told Sky Sports afterwards. “It’s important that he holds this record now, but I think it would be even more important if we get a trophy. We must dare to dream. This could be the start of something. After the games against Manchester City and Arsenal it was important to show resilience, the players did that.”
The record breaker’s conference
Conte thought it was especially important that his team got the defense back in order. It worked. Spurs kept a clean sheet against Fulham. Kane’s goal was therefore immediately worth gold. The England striker, who was ill in the run-up to the game, also appeared on camera himself afterwards and expressed his support for Conte, who was criticized after the defeats against Arsenal and City. The striker said, “We want to win every game for him. He puts so much passion into every training session and every match, we want to repay him with victories.”
Kane said that a penetrating group discussion took place, in which the group of players and the trainer said to each other that they would do what Spurs is good at again. “We have to keep fighting,” continued the top scorer at Sky Sports. “The manager is very passionate, we have to keep working hard for him. Last year we came back very strongly towards the end of the season and qualified for the Champions League. Hopefully this victory will give us some momentum again, there is still a lot to play for.”
