Champions League Football Results – Barcelona Flopped in Lisbon
The hosts got off to a fast start and took the first lead in the game within just three minutes.
With an excellent through ball that found the in-form Darwin Nunez, Julian Weigl split the back three, dodging them superbly.
He then skinned Eric Garcia and was given plenty of time to pick his spot at the front post. So, Nunez put the game up 1-0.
Soon after, Roman Yaremchuk missed a good chance to double Benfica’s lead, and Barça eventually grew somewhat into the game.
Both Frenkie de Jong and Pedri had half-chances, but the visitors’ defense was always an exposed one.
On the half-hour mark, Koeman made the decision to evict Gerard Pique, and rightly so. Pique had a nightmare start to the game, being responsible for the opener and narrowly avoiding a second yellow card.
Nunez came agonizingly close to scoring a second goal minutes after the break. He took the ball around a stricken Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who mistimed a piece of sweeper-keeping. Nunez then delivered an effort but the ball bounced off the post.
Barcelona created very few chances in the second half, and Benfica eventually gave themselves some breathing room. Rafa Silva was the first to react inside the box following a goalmouth scramble.
Sergino Dest became a villain for a handball in the box just before full time, which compounded Barça’s woes.
Nunez took this penalty and right away, he made no mistake, with scoring this time.
Barcelona’s wounds worsened when Eric Garcia was then sent off with four minutes remaining for a second bookable offense.
This capped off yet another dreadful night for Barça at the Estadio de Luz.
