After Bayern Munich beat the La Liga side 3-0 in yesterday’s Champions League football results, Barcelona are out, suffering elimination.
Barcelona will miss the Champions League knockout rounds to instead enter the Europa League on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena.
First-half goals from Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane set Bayern on their way.
And even after this, the Bundesliga champions put the score well out of reach for Barca with Jamal Musiala’s strike. Musiala scored past the hour mark, sealing a perfect record in Group E for the Bavarians, who haven’t lost once.
Meanwhile, Barcelona, who couldn’t make a single chance in the second half, have scored just twice in six group games.
And under new head coach Xavi, they have now lost their last two matches across all competitions. Xavi’s first defeat in charge of the side was against Real Betis on Saturday.
Despite having secured top spot in the group, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann fielded his strongest possible team.
He thus refused to rest his top players after they beat Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The German champions had been struggling defensively, keeping just one clean sheet in their last eight matches prior to Wednesday.
Champions League Football Results – Barcelona Are Out
Jordi Alba tested Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer with a long-range effort in the seventh minute.
And Ousmane Dembele fired over the bar as the Spaniards initially pressed high. But that summed up Barca’s attack for the rest of the game as the Germans gradually took control.
A scintillating Thomas Muller run down the left caught Barca napping but his cutback came just too late for Robert Lewandowski. The latter failed to tap in from a metre.
But we did see a reversal of roles with Lewandowski chipping the ball into the box.
Then, Muller headed in his 50th Champions League goal in the 34th minute. The legendary German has now become only the eighth player in Champions League history to reach that mark.
Bayern scored again before the break with a Leroy Sane missile from 25 metres out.
And Barcelona, who needed a win to advance, failed offer much in the second half.
Finally, Musiala’s tap-in at the 62nd minute sealed Barcelona’s exit from this 2021-22 season of the European championship.
