VfB Stuttgart is no longer led by Pellegrino Matarazzo. On Monday afternoon, the American coach’s firing was confirmed by the club administration of the Bundesliga’s No. 6 team. This is a reaction to Stuttgart’s dismal season debut.
On Sunday, Matarazzo merely observed the failure of his 100th game as a trainer. Stuttgart suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Union Berlin. Die Schwaben are in the bottom half of the Bundesliga with just five points after nine games. There is a justification for the club management to declare Matarazzo’s jubilee game his final right away. According to a statement on the club website, there isn’t a replacement yet.
The American’s efforts, which resulted in two enforcements and promotion to the Bundesliga, are thanked by Chairman Alexander Wehrle. “To counteract the unfavourable outcomes, we have now realised that we need to switch trainers.
“We were completely confident of his coaching abilities when we brought him here three years ago, but we have now reached a stage where we are sure that this separation is inevitable,” says his technical director Sven Mislintat.
Matarazzo also expressed his reaction to leaving the club he had been working for since December 2019: “At VfB, our journey is coming to an end. You can only fully appreciate the uniqueness of this club once you join. I send my best wishes to this group of fans, this club, and this team,” the departing trainer expressed his gratitude to the club for their faith in him.
Stuttgart, the 2007 German top flight champion who has spent recent seasons hopping between the top and second tiers, is the fourth Bundesliga team to fire its head coach this year. At RB Leipzig, Domenico Tedesco had already left, and Thomas Reis bid farewell to VfL Bochum. Thomas Letsch, a former Vitesse coach, arrived to take his place as a replacement there. Finally, Bayer Leverkusen switched Gerardo Seoane for Xabi Alonso last week.
