João Cancelo’s stay at Bayern Munich is seemingly about to come to an end. The wing defender is rented from Manchester City by the leader of the Bundesliga this season, but according to German sources the buyout clause is too much for Bayern.
Bayern thinks Cancelo purchase option is too much
Last summer Bayern picked up Cancelo on a rental basis in Manchester. An option to buy was stipulated for seventy million euros. According to Sky Deutschland, Bayern would like to permanently hire him, but that is very complicated. The Portuguese himself does not expect to play in Munich next season, but the Bayern club management continues to look for a solution.
Cancelo has been a permanent fixture at Manchester City in recent years, but at the end of last year he is said to have had a disagreement with his trainer Pep Guardiola. The defender would not have had a good time at Manchester City, although he himself later denied that it was the coach’s fault. Cancelo is still committed to Manchester until mid-2027 and has made an excellent impression during his loan period.
Real Madrid were also in the race for Cancelo’s signature last winter, according to The Athletic. Spain’s number two made an offer of ‘only’ €20 million fixed and €30 million in variables, but City wanted €70 million for Cancelo. According to Portugal’s A Bola, Arsenal is also seriously interested in Cancelo’s services. He has previously been associated with Barcelona.
