Sergio Busquets does not yet know whether he will continue with the national team. The 34-year-old midfielder was deeply disappointed after his country’s elimination against Morocco in the round of 16. Busquets himself also missed a penalty kick.
Spain lost on Tuesday after one hundred and twenty goalless minutes and a 3-0 penalty series against Morocco. “We deserved to keep going and we did everything we could. It was a very tough match, also physically. We got a great chance (bet on the post, ed.) from Pablo Sarabia, it was a real shame that he missed the chance. After that, the game was decided in the most cruel way via penalties,” the midfielder said after the game.
Busquets thinks that the Spaniards also lacked luck. “We tried to exhaust Morocco, get them moving and finally find the space. We succeeded a few times, but we missed the bit of luck in the last pass or the last shot,” the Barça player reflected on the painful World Cup elimination. Earlier, national coach Luis Enrique already responded to the Spanish penalty debacle, while the Spanish media drew a striking conclusion.
The 34-year-old Busquets did not want to comment on his future yet. “The most important thing now is the selection, it’s not about me. It’s a heavy and difficult night. We will have to get through it and I hope we learn from it for the future.”
Meanwhile, Yassine Bounou turned out to be the great hero in Morocco on Tuesday evening during the penalty shootout against Spain. In Moroccan media, the 31-year-old keeper of Seville is praised after reaching the quarterfinals and Bounou spoke to his compatriots after the victory.
“On behalf of the players I would like to thank all Moroccan supporters. They really helped us on our way to this success,” Canadian-born Bounou told BeIN Sport. “My congratulations go out to all the players and I offer this victory as a gift to all Moroccans.”
