England vs Senegal
FIFA World Cup
Round of 16
4th December 2022
Al Bayt Stadium
Preview
The round of 16 of this Qatar 2022 World Cup will continue with this unexpected but interesting confrontation between England and Senegal, in what will be a clash between two teams that have performed quite well so far.
Very few will have trusted to see Senegal in this instance of the competition after losing their star player Mane. However, they have exceeded expectations and now they will want to continue surprising against one of the main favourites, England.
England
As expected, England managed to win the top of Group B without many complications. Beating teams like Iran, Wales and USA. England kicked off their group stage run with an incredible 6-2 rout of Iran, and bounced back from a goalless draw against USA on matchday two with a resounding 3-0 win over great rivals Wales.
The Three Lions team wants to end a 56-year drought without being able to be crowned world champion in this edition of Qatar 2022 where they have displayed a colourful and interesting style of play, with excellent experienced offensive players such as Harry Kane and Jordan Herdenson, but also with high-quality youngsters like Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden.
And it was precisely these last two who led England’s victory over Wales last Tuesday, with Rashford opening the scoring with a masterful free-kick collection, while Foden put in the second, and it would be Rashford himself who would put the final 3-0..
Senegal
After an unfortunate 2-0 defeat in their debut against the Netherlands, Senegal managed to get back on their feet with a 3-1 win over hosts Qatar, all to finish sealing the second qualification in their history to a Cup round of 16 World Cup with a well-deserved 2-1 victory against a strong cast like Ecuador.
Those led by Aliou Cissé have managed to overcome the hard absence of Sadio Mané, who was injured in the weeks prior to the tournament, with a good offensive production, given that they have scored in both halves of their last two games, and the last minutes of the first half seem to be their favourites, scoring goals after the 40th minute in their last two outings.
The other time that Senegal was able to overcome the group stage of a World Cup was in 2002. An edition in which they even reached the quarterfinals. Where they would end up losing 0-1 against Turkey with a goal conceded in extra time..
