Man City 3-0 Bayern Munich: Manchester City made short work of Bayern Munich on Tuesday in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. It made three hits at home, putting Bayern on the verge of elimination.
Fumbling Bayern on the verge of abyss
Many football fans have been eagerly awaiting the meeting between Manchester City and Bayern Munich for weeks. And both teams certainly did not disappoint. It was a top game with a lot of intensity, a very fast pace and a range of chances for both goals. With Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Aké, there were also enough Dutch players represented in the base.
After eleven goals in his last four matches, attention was mainly focused on Erling Haaland. After about twenty minutes he immediately had a good chance to score his eleventh CL goal of this season. Following a nice attack through Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish, Haaland had a free shooting chance, but his effort lacked the conviction for why he is so often praised.
Rodri opened the scoring after half an hour. The fact that Jamal Musiala had missed a huge opportunity just before, made the feeling at Bayern Munich extra sour. But in the end, the Germans could do nothing but clap for the beautiful long shot of the Spanish midfielder. He curled the ball into the top corner with stunning finesse.
Yann Sommer uncertain
Just like in the duel with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, Yann Sommer was the uncertain factor at Bayern Munich. He got away well once after underestimating the speed in pressing Haaland and acted wavering on high balls on several occasions. However, he also countered this with a considerable range of cat-like reflexes.
For example, he went under a ball after the break, but Sommer then corrected that mistake himself by turning Gündogan’s effort with his foot in an extremely spectacular way. This was followed by a strong phase of the away team that got chance after chance. On one occasion Ederson had a great save on an attempt by Leroy Sané and on the other, De Ligt saw his header narrowly blocked again.
Not only Sommer made an uncertain impression, but Dayot Upamecano also fell through the ice against Manchester City. He had already got away well once, but made a painful mistake on the second goal. Grealish wrested the ball from him, after which Haaland delivered a measured cross. Bernardo Silva, who previously escaped a red card for a tough tackle, punished the mistake.
Haaland equals Müller
Where Upamecano then cheerfully continued to hand in balls, City continued to score goals. Haaland himself also scored a goal, which means that he is now level with Bayern icon Gerd Müller in terms of the number of CL goals. He headed in a cross from John Stones. A blemish on City’s convincing victory was Kevin De Bruyne’s failure with an injury.
With the 3-0 victory, Manchester City has one foot in the semi-finals of the Champions League. In eight days, Bayern Munich must hope for a miracle at home to make up for the margin of three.
