Atalanta 0-2 Juventus: The Champions League is one step closer for Juventus. It won a visit to Atalanta Bergamo on Sunday afternoon: 0-2.
Back challenging for the Champions League spots
Juventus successfully appealed against the points penalty handed out for various financial wrongdoings. The club threatened to drown completely this season, but due to the windfall it is suddenly second and is still participating in Champions League football, which Atalanta can also secretly hope for.
The first half at the Gewiss Stadium, home of Atalanta, was equal. After a somewhat tame opening phase, in which Juventus claimed a penalty because Nicolo Fagioli went to the ground, both teams had a great chance. Juventus was close through Ángel Di María, Giorgio Scalvini hit the post on behalf of Atalanta. Little else happened before the halftime signal, but Mario Pasalic was still close to 1-0 for Atalanta.
Nineteen-year-old Englishman takes a leading role at winning Juventus
Samuel Iling Junior crowned his first starting place for the Old Lady with a goal. He captured the ball himself and shot in a few seconds later with a bit of luck. The nineteen-year-old Englishman is only the third English player to score for Juventus in Serie A. David Platt (1992/93) and William John Jordan (1948/49) preceded him.
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini intervened almost immediately by bringing in Luis Muriel. His substitution caused something, because after Juventus missed a chance at 0-2, Muriel was twice close to 1-1 himself. Although Atalanta tried with all his might to pull another draw out of the fire and Juventus had a hard time at times, the 1-1 was no longer possible. In fact, deep into injury time, Juventus countered to 0-2: substitute Dusan Vlahovic scored.
Due to the defeat of Lazio at number five AC Milan, Juventus is in second place in Serie A. It has four days to prepare for the semi-final in the Europa League against Sevilla. The Old Lady still plays against Cremonese, Empoli, AC Milan and Udinese in Serie A. Atalanta will face Salernitana, Hellas Verona, Internazionale and Monza.
Racist chants from Atalanta supporters
Referee Daniele Doveri has angered Dusan Vlahovic. The Juventus striker claims to have been subjected to racism in the duel with Atalanta by supporters of the home club, but believes that Doveri has not acted correctly.
Vlahovic was called a ‘gypsy’ by some of the Atalanta supporters and was visibly affected by it. After he made the 0-2, the finger appeared and that was explained by Doveri as provocative cheering: Vlahovic got yellow for that. It caused even more anger at the rush hour.
