Steph Houghton has won 121 caps with the England women’s national team. She used to captain the said as well. However, the Manchester City defender suffered a torn Achilles in September 2021.
As a result she just about missed her spot in the Euro 2022. She was included in the initial 28-player team. Howevershe failed to make the final list of 23 players.
The side would go on to win the title. Reflecting on this the centre back would describe the feeling of watching her former teammates lifting the title to be a bittersweet experience.
Steph Houghton reflected: “Of course I did watch the final. I couldn’t miss it but honestly, throughout the tournament it was difficult for me to watch the games.
“I messaged my teammates before the campaign and before every kickoff. It was bittersweet as I was not there with the team. I was dying to be there when I knew I wasn’t selected, I felt bad watching the tournament. It was so frustrating and it was very strange. I was their captain so I did it everytime. I really wanted them to lift the trophy as I have seen their hard work.
“But watching the final I realised it hadn’t changed how I felt about any of the girls or how I feel about England. It’s so amazing for them and for the women’s game.”
