The champions dominated from start to finish to earn their fifth league win in a row.
Argentine striker Martinez was the one to get the scoring started after his bullet header in the 29th minute.
Martinez could’ve doubled his side’s advantage before halftime, but saw Alessio Cragno (Man of the Match) save his tame penalty.
The hosts did not have to wait long for their second goal, however. Alexis Sanchez, on a rare start, volleyed home five minutes after the break.
Cagliari had already lost from that moment on, and Hakan Calhanoglu soon added a third goal.
Finally, Martinez completed the scoring in the 68th minute with a delicate finish. After bringing Nicolo Barella’s inch-perfect long pass under control, he gave a 4-0 to Inter and a brace to himself.
Serie A Football Results – Inter Climbed to the Top of the Italian Table
With AC Milan and Napoli both dropping points this weekend, Inter took full advantage to hit the summit – first place. They are now one point ahead of their city rivals Milan.
Meanwhile, Cagliari dropped to 19th position on the Serie A table, having taken just 10 points from 17 matches.
In the match, Inter’s 14th goal from a set piece this season was what first broke the resistance. Martinez powering a brilliant header home from Calhanoglu’s corner.
After Denzel Dumfries was denied by Cragno just before the interval, Martinez looked set to double his tally. But the overworked Cagliari stopper made yet another fine save instead.
Sanchez was enjoying his rare run out, in this blue moon starting opportunity. And he scored his first Serie A goal of the season expertly, volleying the ball into the goalpost’s bottom corner.
The Chilean forward then provided an assist for Calhanoglu. The latter unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner from 25 metres out to make it 3-0.
Eventually, Martinez netted his second goal in the match and 10th in this 2021-22 Serie A season to finish 4-0.
