Sergio Oliveira scored a penalty on his AS Roma debut as Jose Mourinho’s side beat relegation-threatened Cagliari 1-0 on Sunday. Among other of yesterday’s Serie A football results, Roma ended a three-match winless run in a football match against Cagliari.
Serie A Football Results – Roma Ended a Three-match Winless Run
Portuguese midfielder Oliveira, who joined Roma on loan from Porto on Wednesday, scored the only goal of the match. He calmly converted a spot kick for the capital club in the 32nd minute, following a Dalbert handball.
Jordan Veretout and Nicolo Zaniolo threatened a second for the hosts after the break.
And yet, the best chance actually fell to Cagliari when Joao Pedro’s close-range shot was pushed onto the bar by Rui Patricio five minutes from time.
But eventually, the hosts won 1-0 and this was Roma’s first win in almost a month. Prior to this, they had only managed to pick up one point from three games.
This win, though, took Mourinho’s side up to sixth place with 35 points, viz. six points behind Juventus in fifth.
On the other hand, Cagliari’s bid to avoid the relegation drop enjoyed a boost as 2022 started. They delivered back-to-back wins at the start of the year, but were without 11 players here. Key players were missing due to injuries, COVID-19 and Africa Cup of Nations duties for this trip to the capital.
Even so, they only relented a marginal defeat, which left them 18th with 16 points.
