For the first time in history, the England national football team have reached the finals of Euro 2020. After beating Denmark at Wembley Stadium, in football today, England are in the Euros final for the first time.
The Three Lions won 2-1 in extra time in the European Championship’s semi-final against Denmark.
Match Report
The host entered the match as the better team, but the guests still took the first lead.
After 30 minutes, Mikkel Damsgaard sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. It was the first goal that “Gordi Albion” received in this championship.
Denmark took the lead in the 30th minute with a goal by Mikkel Damsgaard.
However, Denmark captain Simon Kjaer equalized for England nine minutes later by pushing the ball into his own net.
Then, finally, England captain Harry Kane clinched the victory for the English with a goal in the 104th minute.
The First Half
Interestingly, in the 25th minute of the game, Jordan Pickford broke the record of the legendary Gordon Banks.
Banks, in 1966, played 720 minutes without conceding a goal. Pickford broke the record as he collected 721 minutes of clean sheets.
However, just four minutes later, Sampdoria striker Damsgaard interrupted his series. Thus, Pickford’s record, the new record in clean sheets, is now 725 minutes without conceding a single goal.
The home side equalized after Damsgaard’s lead in the 39th minute. Saka, from the wing, threw the ball into the penalty area towards Sterling, but Kjaer slipped in front of him.
Kjaer, unfortunately, turned the ball into his own net.
The Second Half
England could have turned things around in the 55th minute, when Maguire shot with his head, but Schmeichel reacted brilliantly.
In the continuation of the match, the host pressed, and the Danes looked for their opportunity from the counter.
However, in this second half, the result did not change from a 1-1 tie, so, the match went into overtime.
A pivotal moment occurred in the 102nd minute when Sterling suffered a knock down, in the penalty area. Subsequently, Dutch referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the white spot and the VAR room confirmed his decision.
So, Harry Kane shot from the white spot, and Schmeichel defended well.
But, in rebound, the ball bounced back to the English captain, who did not make a mistake a second time.
