After qualifying for the last-16, Sweden and Ukraine will meet in Glasgow on Tuesday evening. And we have curated teams news on each to come up with our Euro 2020 predictions, Sweden vs Ukraine.
Sweden’s late victory to win Group E last week (football updates here) unknowingly helped Ukraine advance to the last 16.
Ukraine thus went forward despite losing their last Euro 2020 match 0-1 match to Austria. They qualified with only three points and a negative goal differential.
Both teams’ Euro 2020 campaigns having taken very different paths thus far, though.
The first elimination round’s final encounter will face an in-form Swedish team against their severely unlucky opponents.
Team news
Sweden
- The only real roster question in the side is who starts up front. After all, no one is looking particularly convincing alongside Alexander Isak.
- Sweden may take a chance and start Dejan Kulusevski or Emil Forsberg with Isak or stick with Marcus Berg instead.
Sweden possible starting lineup: Olsen; Lustig, Lindelof, Danielson, Augustinsson; S. Larsson, Ekdal, Olsson, Forsberg; Quaison, Isak
Ukraine
- Ukraine may reshuffle their line-up against Sweden on Monday after humbly losing to Austria in their last group encounter.
- Ruslan Malinovskiy, who exited the pitch at halftime against Austria, may now be worried about his place in the team.
- With Serhiy Sydorchuk not looking dazzling at the base of their midfield, Taras Stepanenko may reclaim a starting berth here.
- Finally, Ukraine is still without Denys Popov and Oleksandr Zubkov due to injuries.
Ukraine possible starting lineup: Bushchan; Karavaev, Matviyenko, Zabarnyi, Mykolenko; Malinovskyi, Sydorchuk, Zinchenko; Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk, Tsyhankov
Euro 2020 Predictions – Sweden vs Ukraine
- Sweden finished first in their group, ahead of even Spain, after defeating Poland 3-2 in a five-goal thriller. They’ve also gone undefeated in their last eight games.
- Many people predicted that Ukraine would defeat the Netherlands to first place in their group. However, they ended up finishing in third place instead.
- All in all, Ukraine is simply too inconsistent for us to put our faith in them. At the very least, you know what you’re going to get with Sweden, meanwhile.
Ukraine has enough attacking potential to break down a staunch Sweden defense at some time during the 90 (/120) minutes.
However, the Swedes haven’t lost in a while for good reason, and teamwork goes a long way in tournament football.
The Blagult can thus snare the win and advance to the next round with their own set of final-third threats.
