Former referee Andujar Oliver considers the penalty, that lead to Seville’s opening goal, should not have been awarded in the first place.
“It’s not a penalty for me,” Oliver told Radio MARCA.
Marc Bartra was charged with a foul due to a backward move toward Luuk de Jong.
Oliver claims that the video assistant could not change Mateu Lahoz’s penalty decision because the player made contact with the Dutchman.
Seville thus seemingly got an unfair advantage against Real Betis with the penalty, but VAR has been helpless in reversing the decision:
“VAR can’t stop the referee because there’s touch, but there are thousands of those acts in a match so I don’t think it’s enough to assign a penalty.”
