Schalke 1-6 RB Leipzig
Schalke 04 has suffered one of the biggest home defeats ever in the Bundesliga. Die Knappen lost 1-6 to RB Leipzig without a chance and have still only collected nine points in the competition.
The foundation for the great victory was laid in the first half by Leipzig. André Silva scored twice, while Benjamin Henrichs and Timo Werner also contributed. As a result, a 0-4 score was already reached at halftime.
Ten minutes after the break, Soichiro Kozuki did something back in a one-on-one situation, but it was only a plaster on the sore wound. With a beautiful, diagonal marker, Dani Olmo made it 1-5; Yussuf Poulsen set the final score at 1-6.
Remarkably, this is already the second 1-6 defeat for Schalke this season, after 1. FC Union Berlin already won with the same figures in Gelsenkirchen in August. The 0-6 against VfL Bochum in 1981 remains the biggest home defeat ever for Schalke. Furthermore, Schalke never lost with six goals difference at home.
Schalke, which currently does not have access to the injured Dutch duo Thomas Ouwejan and Sepp van den Berg, is six points away from sixteenth place, which would avoid direct relegation. Thanks to the victory, Leipzig takes second place in the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund 4-3 Augsburg
For Sébastien Haller, Sunday’s game against FC Augsburg was extra special. The first performance after his cancer diagnosis gave the Borussia Dortmund striker goosebumps.
In the 62nd minute, Haller made an appearance for Borussia Dortmund. “The great agony is at an end,” Kicker wrote. “Simply delicious,” could be read in Bild. “Finally the time has come,” it sounded at Sport1. It was an emotional return from the Ivorian, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer six months ago.
Haller himself had also enjoyed it, “I had goosebumps. The welcome from the fans was incredible and one I will never forget. I am very happy to be here again. I believe everyone enjoyed that moment. The fans have created an incredible atmosphere, which has helped us.”
Haller, who played with special boots, knows his comeback is just the beginning. “It’s nice to get back to playing, but I still have some catching up to do. I am focused on working hard every day to get back to full fitness. I hope it will be that time in a few weeks. Now I’m just happy.’
The former Ajax player looked further, “We must not forget why we play football. We can do what we love to do. I enjoy every moment on the field. Such moments are precious. Because of what I’ve been through, I realize again how important that is.”
