Paul Scholes regretted the “ridiculous” events that led to Real Madrid and Barcelona defeating Manchester United in the Champions League. He still maintains that “they should have won five or six European Cups in some other era.”
“We were really quite unlucky. We could have won four, five, or six European Cups in any other era,” said the Red Devils legend to the A Goal in One Podcast.
Manchester United was at its top form. But, Barcelona was too. Indeed they had a super team at the time, which meant the United didn’t stand a chance:
“However, the players who were there-you are staring at the Barcelona squad from Guardiola. God, how nice were they?!”
“Through the team you could go right. You have Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi at midfield. Henry is on the left. Centre halves of Gerard Pique and Carlos Puyol. Just impossible.
They are without a doubt the best team against which I have played. They are one of the best teams that ever existed.”
