Bayern Munich did not make a bid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018 because they already had Robert Lewandowski, says Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
The CEO of Bayern told Tuttosport: “We had Lewandowski, and still do. We did not need a striker like Ronaldo.”
“I’ve seen Lewandowski on the field for a long time now, which is why we’re not searching for a replacement now. It is no coincidence that we have invested in [Leroy] Sane, a special kind of player.”
Rummenigge claims Bayern still have the desire to put the Portuguese on their books, though. He went on to praise Ronaldo:
“Juventus did a really nice job and Agnelli [Andrea] landed an extraordinary hit. From all standpoints, it was a successful purchase. CR7 scored a lot in essential games. And he helped Juventus develop commercially thanks to his global profile.
“Ronaldo, like Lewandowski, lives for football. They learn, eat and rest with one objective: to improve performance and be the strongest. They are examples for young people. They ’re winners and extremely successful so they make sacrifices every day because they want to succeed.”
