Belgiun striker Dries Mertens may have been approached by Chelsea to sign Napoli. The striker will be without a contract with the Italian outfit in the summer, and up for fair play.
It is surprising that Mertens remains in Napoli, as The Blues were credited with an interest in Belgium International during the January transfer window.
More recently, Frank Lampard’s side has allegedly not given up in their search for Mertens, despite potentially facing much pressure from Inter Milan to secure the services of the striker. RAI journalist Paolo Paganini said, in speaking to AreaNapoli, “Inter and Chelsea have re-launched [their attempts to sign] the Belgian, offering him a higher salary.”
He goes on to ask what everyone is thinking, “Will Mertens leave?” He further muses, “If he left, Napoli might take a double shot (sign two players, instead of the one they’re supposed to do).”
Mertens has scored six goals and five assists in the 21 league outings of the term before January in Napoli. The 32-year-old has scored 121 goals in 309 games in all of Napoli’s competitions.
