To protect Thomas Partey’s interest from Arsenal, Atletico Madrid may be willing to double the salary of their star midfielder.
Ghana International has been closely linked to the move to the Emirates in recent weeks following the impressive Wanda Metropolitano campaign of 2019-20. Since 2015, the middleman has chalked up 15 goals in 174 games for Atletico in all competitions. In fact, Partey has racked up 35 appearances in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side this season.
Due to this increased popularity, the La Liga team is supposedly eager to offer him a bumper new deal to stay in the Spanish capital.
According to The Guardian, Atletico opened negotiations with Partey on a new deal until the summer of 2025 in a bid to make him stay.
At the moment, Partey has a €50 m (£43.6 m) release clause at Atletico, but this could be up to €100 m (£87.2 m) if it were to make fresh terms. The new deal would see him earn £130,000 a week in Madrid.
The article also states that Arsenal has yet to make a formal offer to the 26-year-old, although the Gunners have reportedly made contact with the player’s representative.
