Even if Nicolò Zaniolo returns from injury, UEFA reportedly would not allow Roma to register a midfielder for the Europa League.
Il Tempo claims that many European clubs have asked UEFA to review their registration process and to allow the possibility of changing one or two players on the list presented at the end of the transfer market in January.
But the newspaper maintains that the European Football Association in Nyon opposes the solution.
Zaniolo was excluded from the list of players eligible for the UEFA tournament after suffering an injury in January and was subsequently excluded for the remainder of the season.
The return of football seems to be some 40 days away. A forced break could mean that Italy will be back in time, in the event of a resumption.
The Portuguese now hoped to get the youngster back for the 16th round against Seville, but UEFA was not willing to accept the changes, which meant that Zaniolo and Zappacosta could only return to Serie A.
Roma coach Paulo Fonseca will seemingly have to cope without the excluded trio Zaniolo, Davide Zappacosta and Juan Jesus.
